As we waited I looked around the courtroom and tried to control my own emotions while I was drowning in those of all who were around me. It was so hard being able to feel everything they were. The pain, the anger, the sorrow, and the devastation. So many levels of emotion all hitting me at once.
Not only were the families of the victims here, but Black’s family was here as well. I couldn’t begin to fathom how difficult it must be for them to know of the heinous crimes Black had committed and still be hoping and praying the judge would accept the plea bargain deal and spare Black’s life.
I’d just about tolerated all I could of the overwhelming amount of emotion in the room and was in the process of asking Edward to go with me out into the hall to wait, when the bailiff announced that the judge had reached his decision and was on his way back to the courtroom.
We all stood upon Judge Miller’s arrival, as the court clerk banged the gavel on her desk indicating court was once again in session. As the judge began to speak about all he had taken into account when coming to his decision, I felt Edward let go of my hand and pull me close to him with his arm around me for support. What happened next was something that didn’t occur often.
